Meyer May Home by Frank Lloyd Wright – July 2025

A home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1909 for a man named Meyer May was just two blocks from our home in Grand Rapids. It is only open for tours three days a week for just a few hours and all the tours were booked for months out but we were able to get in! It was so exhilarating to see such a beautifully restored home that was so unique for its time.

The Meyer May House is a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house in the Heritage Hill Historic District of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

That round and square urn is used throughout the home, both inside and out.

Even though the tour schedule was completely booked for several months, I sent a message to them and they got us in the next week!

Wright worked with a designer to create the furniture, textiles, etc in the home. This is Meyer's desk.

In the corner of the main living room are many books and this old record player.

The books were restored, just like the furniture.

Much of the furniture was recovered from other homes in Grand Rapids and restored.

One of these chairs is a restored original that was in the home, the other was recreated by a craftsman.

The light fixtures reflect the overall design. This is also the thermostat for the heater.

The soft lighting around the ledge went around the entire living room.

This mural is original. It was covered by 14 layers of paint. This entry way table holds coats, hats, shoes and umbrellas or canes.

The furniture, carpets, light fixtures, windows, everything carried a unified look and theme.

Four of these lights are attached to the dinner table which created a cozy eating area.

The house was built with electricity and central vacuum.

The master bedroom. Yes, these are the original beds.

The shower really surprised me. So modern, especially for 1909!

The master bath was very nice.

The wall colors were designed to fit the prairie style and was created by an intensive multi-color stippling process. The molding was used to hang artwork easily.

Their daughter's bedroom has a lovely balcony which they closed in after the Lindberg kidnapping in 1932. They removed the enclosure during renovations.
