QuikTrip: Murder in the Mountains

Did my catchy headline get your attention? Well, it’s not just click bait, I’m talking about an Agatha Christie play we attended at the Black Hills Playhouse Friday night. 😉
The Black Hills Playhouse, associated with the University of South Dakota, was established in 1946 as a summer stock theater located deep in the Black Hills. It’s one of the oldest continuously running summer stock theatres in the nation. I was delighted to find it during my research!

The drive to the playhouse took us through deep woodlands on a winding road that seemed to never end. We passed Ghost Canyon, Buffalo Rock, Bear Gulch Trail and who knows what else. I think I saw Sasquatch’s little sister. I told Dale that it seems that every where we go is about one hour from our apartment, unless we are going somewhere in town, then every thing is about 10 minutes away. Honestly, that’s pretty convenient.
I found the playhouse online and purchased the tickets in advance. The theater looked nice in the online photos but in person it was even more charming. There were many people milling about outside, getting popcorn and other snacks in the snack bar or just chatting. After getting our snacks we settled in to our balcony seats for the 7:30 show time.

The production of Murder on the Orient Express was very good, not as good as what we see in Georgetown, but still, very good. Our seats were comfy and gave us a great view. I guess there were about 150 people in attendance. The actors were all ages and did a great job. The props were also good. Unfortunately all the plays we attend never let us take photos during the play. By 9:30 we were headed back to Rapid City. It was well worth the expense and the drive.
