Welcome Baby! Our Third Grandchild Makes Her Debut

Two weeks ago today the kids were packed and ready to head to the hospital. Everything was ready. A beautiful bedroom was prepared, bags were packed, and the soon-to-be mom and dad had their game faces on!

The ball got rolling early Thursday morning in a spacious room at St. David’s North. Dale and I, along with the maternal grandparents, enjoyed spending the day with them. Little did we know when we left that afternoon, that we would not see them again until Saturday morning, when the little one was safely tucked in her mom’s arms.

Our son had sent a photo of her shortly after delivery, swaddled and ruddy with the biggest cheeks! She was born the afternoon of Friday, May 16 — making her the third member of a three-member family to have a birthday in May! Yes, all of them will be celebrating their birthdays within two weeks of each other.

Saturday morning the grandparents arrived early (of course). She’s such a sweet baby; a good eater, sleeper and seldom fusses. Of course we are not living with her, but we are getting good reports. Our oldest daughter and her family arrived around noon after driving down from North Texas. All three of my grandchildren in one room for the first time. It’s a surreal experience, being a grandmother. In my mind, I see my grandmother, and I don’t feel like I’m in the for real grandma club. Ha, ha! Nevertheless, I am and I’m glad to be here.

We all visited for a while, then Dale and I had lunch at Rudy’s with our daughter and her family before they hit the road for their three-hour drive home. Our middle daughter and her husband were headed to Washington DC that day for a conference she was attending that week.

Sunday morning Dale and I arrived at the hospital with breakfast and hung out until just after noontime when they were discharged.

This brief synopsis only scratches the surface of the wonderful first days with baby. We’ve had the opportunity to hang out with them since, and I am looking forward to taking care of her three days a week starting in August. Again, very surreal.

Births are the biggest events on earth and the biggest milestones for a couple. God literally created this baby girl and put breath in her lungs. She is created in His image and her spirit will live for eternity. It’s not like a pet, or a plant, or anything else that we care for. My greatest prayer for her is that she will give her life to Jesus early and love Him whole heartedly.

God willing, Dale and I will be welcoming more grandchildren in the (hopefully near) future. Ha!
