Founders Grove – July 2023

After leaving McKinleyville, Dale and I headed south to Napa, our next destination. However, we saw as much as we could on the way, including a drive down Avenue of the Giants and a hike through Founders Grove. It is a fairly short hike but full of many beautiful, large Redwoods.

So much to see in Northern California!

All of these little trees are Redwoods. It's amazing that they may grow to be so huge.

Many of the Redwoods are hollow but continue to live.

This burl is a collection of tree cells on the side of tree usually caused by some trauma to the tree.

When this tree fell it splintered. Some of the pieces almost looked like milled boards from the lumber yard.

This photo helps illustrate the immenseness of Redwoods. Their roots grow wide, but not deep. This is the "Dyerville Giant".

The Founders Grove Trail had several side trails. Each were pretty short but filled with amazing trees.

This photo shows three fallen Redwoods. Apparently one fell, causing a second, then third to topple.

Amazingly, this old Redwood has survived several fires.

Founders Tree is 346 feet tall!
