Cathedral Spires Trail and Bison – July 2025

On the last Saturday we spent in South Dakota we went back to Custer State Park to try and see more bison and to hike the Cathedral Spires Trail. We did both!

Wildflowers were everywhere in South Dakota. It must be the milder climate.

More spires under a hot sun.

In the distance you can see a building that sits on Black Elk Peak, the highest peak east of the Rockies.

The spires are a natural phenomenon formed by the erosion of granite.

The spires are much bigger than you realize until you get next to them.

Another hiker took our photo at the end of the trail.

I'm glad they let us know.
