Badlands National Park, South Dakota – June 2025

Badlands National Park is in South Dakota has dramatic landscapes with layered rock formations, steep canyons and towering spires. Bison, bighorn sheep and prairie dogs inhabit its sprawling grasslands. We drove the Badlands Loop Road (Highway 240), which winds past scenic lookouts. Afterwards we stopped by Wall Drugs, a popular tourist trap.

Even this desolate terrain has some beauty.

This is one of the most unwelcoming trailheads I've ever encountered. I would not have been an asset to the Israelites wandering in the desert. Ha

Swallows have found a place for their nests underneath the trail map structure.

In the center of the photo you can see cars in a parking lot. This gives you a sense of size of the terrain.

We saw quite a few bison while in the Badlands. The grassy plains are mixed in to the arid hills.

Inside Wall Drugs there are several smaller stores.

We stopped by for a quick visit but the missile silo had already been closed.

A thunderstorm was brewing as we left Wall.

Wow! We watched this form until the wind got really high. We escaped the hail under a nearby overpass.
