Hill Country Anniversary Celebration

We first celebrated our anniversary in Fredericksburg, Texas in 2002 for our ninth anniversary. Over the years we have spent many anniversaries in or around Fredericksburg, and we’ve enjoyed every one. So when Dale whisked me off to Fredericksburg for our 32nd anniversary, I was extremely happy about it.

Dale doesn’t often plan trips for us but when he does, he does a great job, and keeps it a secret, something I don’t think I could do. When we headed out last Friday morning I didn’t know what was in store, except that we would be in the Hill Country.

The day started with a hearty breakfast at Munch Munch Waffles in Liberty Hill. It was very good and actually had great coffee. After that we headed west to Doeskin Ranch located in Balcones Canyonland. We had stopped here in April after my foot surgery. At the time I was going stir crazy wearing a orthopedic boot, but now we could actually go for a short hike, so we did! The Rim Rock Trail is just under two miles and has a bit of elevation gain. It was a beautiful walk with sun peaking through the clouds. The rest of the day was overcast, so I was very thankful for this blessing.

We then headed towards Fredericksburg, but Dale took a weird route so that I didn’t know until the last few miles where we were headed. Very sneaky.

When we pulled up to our accommodations I had to laugh. It was a giant wine barrel! There were four of them situated alongside one another with well-maintained native landscaping that was a small hint of the quality we found inside. The interior was very nice! Everything about it was comfortable and inviting. It was a very cozy place just a couple miles outside of town, which was perfect. Dale did well! Ha ha.

Friday afternoon we enjoyed some German food at the Fredericksburg Brewery, one of our favorite restaurants. Years ago we spent one anniversary in one of the rooms above the restaurant. We’ll never do that again though, it’s way too noisy in town.

Friday evening was the Christmas Parade. Fredericksburg does a great job with the parade. We’ve been very enthusiastic attendees at many of them. It’s very Texan with a sprinkle of military veteran and a large dose of Jesus-centered floats. We squeezed in to the crowd with our chairs and coffee to stake our claim. We were at the very end of the route where the parade does and u-turn and heads back the way it came. This gave us the opportunity to look at each entry very closely.

Saturday morning we slept in, watched some YouTube on our iPad and then headed into town. Our only plans were to visit the Pacific War Museum and walk the rows of shops. I think we accomplished our mission. That evening we enjoyed snacks on the deck of our wine barrel cabin.

Sunday morning, once again, we took our time getting up. Dale is always up early, and I rarely sleep past 7am, so we took advantage of this. We had made the decision to go to Enchanted Rock today. We originally had planned to go back to the Pacific War Museum for the National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony being held at noon, but we didn’t want to wade back into the sea of holiday shoppers that make Fredericksburg so lively, nor did we want to wait around until noon.

As soon as we were on our way to Enchanted Rock I was glad we made the decision we did. We both love being outside and love this park. We have been many times. Recently the state came out with life-time veterans passes so we get in free! After summiting Enchanted Rock, we headed home, stopping for a sandwich in Burnet.

Please enjoy our additional photos and this somewhat lengthy video of our trip.
