QuikTrip: Saugatuck

There are so many charming lakeside towns along Michigan’s coast and Saugatuck is definitely one of them. Unfortunately everyone agrees with me and was in town the day we visited! Ha!

According to Wikipedia, Saugatuck was originally a lumber town and port, but became a noted art colony and tourist destination in the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th century. Today, tourists (including us) are drawn to the art galleries, harbor, marinas, scenery, and unusual stores. The numerous yachts and nice homes make it apparent it is a popular place to visit.

After lunch we walked around a bit, looking in shops and enjoying the beautiful day. It was definitely a great activity for a Sunday afternoon.

I would definitely recommend this town for a visit. However, we passed through several other towns (like Frankfort) on our trip down Michigan’s coast that I would go to first simply because they are charming and less touristy.
