Washington DC, Part I

Dale and I were trying to remember how many times we had been to DC. The first time we were still both active duty Marines stationed in North Carolina. I think this current trip is our fifth. I could write a whole blog on the second trip when he “kidnapped” me and I stood on the curb at the Austin airport crying at 5am refusing to go any further until he told me where we were going. Good times.

Now here we are in the DC area again. Our place in Woodbridge is just 20 minutes away which allowed us to pop into DC three times last week, our first week here. Here are a few photos from our adventures.

On Tuesday, our first full day in town, we headed to see Old Abe sitting on his stone throne. If there is one place we seem to always start our DC adventures it is at the Lincoln Memorial.

On Saturday, which is our day for serious adventures since Dale works all week, we planned to take our time at just a couple of sites. Also, some of our family is coming later this month and we will have the opportunity to see much more then.

Our first stop on Saturday was the US Navy Memorial Plaza. Dale’s father, who served in the Navy, told us that he had added his name to a data base called the Navy Log and that we should be able to locate him on the log in the visitor center. We did indeed find him listed. We browsed some of the exhibits then headed to the National Archives. No photos were allowed inside the archives building. We took a quick tour, and muscled our way up to see the Constitution or Declaration of Independence. Ha! Afterwards we headed to the National Gallery. We spent a lot of time here. So many rooms of beautiful art. I particularly like paintings of every day people and landscapes.

Take a look at more photos from our visit on the photos page.
