Cedar Breaks Camping Trip

We were able to get a campsite at our favorite local camping spot, Cedar Breaks Campground on Lake Georgetown. The weekend started off a little dicey when heavy rain gave everything a good soaking on Friday afternoon, but by the time Dale got of work at 5pm, the rain had stopped and we headed out.
This is only the second time Dale and I have been camping with just the two of us. After years of family-size camping trips, out excursions have become a very well-oiled machine. Dale tackles the tent and I get the “kitchen” area set up. It’s amazing how much we packed into the back of my little Honda Fit. We had a ton of wood! What’s the point of camping without a blazing fire?

When we pulled into the campground it was apparent tent campers are the minority. Plush RVs, as well as small, streamline campers, filled almost every space. We were not able to get a site on the edge of the water but we were just across the street and conveniently located just a few spots down from the bathroom, in site #30.
With just the two of us we began picking up groceries once we set up the site rather than packing a town of food into the car. So, once we were set up we scooted just a couple of miles down the road to the HEB. We grabbed a few items and headed back to start the fire and eat.
The temperature was very pleasant. During the night it got into the 50s but we prepared by bringing plenty of blankets, and even a heated mattress cover. Sites with electric are the best! Ha! Each morning we enjoyed a cup of instant Starbucks coffee while we watch our neighbors buzzing around their respective nests. I think everyone there brought a dog with them. It almost felt like we were in a neighborhood rather than a campground. We have heard that many people are living in the RVs since they are now “working from home”. Good for them …. except they are hogging all the sites with their fancy, smancy RVs.

Saturday morning we took our time over our instant coffee, then decided to explore another park also located on the Lake Georgetown called Camp Tejas. It’s located just a few miles away as the crow flies but 25 minutes by car. I’m glad we made the effort. The hiking trail at Camp Tejas follows the San Gabriel and is a really beautiful walk. There is also camping sites but no running water or electricity. Even the toilets are compost style – not thank you. Been there, done that, not interested. We walked about four miles, headed back to Cedar Breaks, showered and headed into town for lunch.
We got a bite at the Sweet Lemon just off the square then walked around the square a bit. I stopped by a shop called The Exchange and picked up some Stouderhouse oils for my face. I discovered this homemade body product line at the Georgetown Farmers Market one Saturday and I really like the “Night Serum” which is essentially a blend of high-quality oils.
Once we got back to the site Dale took a little nap in the hammock while I looked at my pile of magazines I subscribed to for the grandkid’s school fundraiser. I never read them at home but they are perfect for times where there is nothing else to do. That’s one of the best things about camping – there is not much to do. I’m not popping up and down, doing this and that, puttering here and there. We relax.
That night Dale cooked us steaks over our fire, along with diced potatoes, baked beans and sweet Hawaiian rolls. Yum! We got to bed by 9:30, watched a little Netflix on our iPad and then fell into oblivion. Our tent has a completely mesh top, so when the rain fly is not on we see everything around and above us. It’s pretty cool, literally.

We did something Sunday morning we’ve never done. We did not begin breaking down the site upon waking. Instead, we got dressed and went to our church. I needed to finish the last session of a seven-part study of 1 Peter. We went directly back to the site, grabbed our camping chairs and found a spot near the water to have lunch. The weather was beautiful, both Saturday and Sunday. We watched the boats, kayakers and SUPers enjoying the water, then headed back to pack up. What a weekend!
