Our First Adventures in Asheville

Our arrival to Asheville coincided with a busy holiday weekend. However, it still didn’t seem as crowded as Round Rock on a normal day!
Once we got settled into our Airbnb, Dale, J and I ran out for some groceries, which was quite an adventure. I have a feeling it is going to take a while for us to understand the layout of the town. It seems a bit unconventional. Thank goodness for online maps! It is pretty neat though that in almost every direction I can see mountains. It’s really a change from the wide open spaces of Central Texas.
Once we got the car unloaded we headed out to find a grocery store. We ended up at Harries Teeter, which we are familiar with from the time we lived in North Carolina many years ago. There is also a Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Super Walmart, etc., but, I think our favorite is a local chain called Ingels that reminds us of HEB. So, needless to say we signed up for their discount card!
J’s fiancé also arrived Friday evening and stayed with us until Monday. Saturday morning we all wanted to get outside so we went for a walk at the Asheville Arboretum. It was a beautiful walk along a river and among tall trees. I miss trees like this. I grew up in Northeast Texas and all of the Pines and Oaks make me happy! Then of course we needed food. I won’t go into detail about every unique eatery we patronized but I will say there is a lot to choose from. (Move over Round Rock Donuts, I think I’ve found something better.)

On Monday, July 4 the Js headed to Charlotte, while Dale and I headed south to Brevard looking for a few trails and waterfalls. We found both. We spent about six hours in the Pisgah National Forest and on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The vistas are breathtaking and the trails are beautiful. We had packed a lunch and took our time. It’s so exciting to know that within 30 miles of our place are so many opportunities to immerse ourselves in God’s creation. I need to do a better job of taking photos but you can take a look at a few here.
One day in the near future you will be able to see some of the wonderful video that Dale has been shooting. Poor guy, he has to work and doesn’t have the time that I do!
