Madrid, Spain 2024

Dale and I spent two weeks in Spain in September 2024. The first week was spent in Madrid with a day trip to Toledo. We stayed at the Hotel Europa on the Plaza del Sol, which is the social hub of Madrid. Apparently Spaniards like to stay up all night visiting outside our window! Ha ha

Our hotel has the shell symbol which indicates the Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James. The Camino goes through Madrid.

We stopped at an ice cream shop.

The bear is a symbol of Madrid, Spain, and is featured in the city's coat of arms and in this famous sculpture. It has been used since the 16th century.

Plaza de la Villa was one of the main centers of the medieval capital. Here you see two very old towers, dating back to the 1500s.

Friends from Round Rock joined us for a Flamenco Show.

This guy played beautiful guitar music.

Flamenco originated in Andalusia, Spain as a fusion of many cultures. The art form emerged in the late 18th century and is now a symbol of Spanish music and culture.

This is the door to las Carboneras convent, an early 17th century convent where a female community of nuns sell cookies through a secret opening in the wall.

We had to have some paella while we were in Spain.

We enjoyed tapas on Plaza Mayor.

The Pontifical Basilica of St. Michael is a Baroque-style Catholic church and minor basilica in central Madrid.

We visited the city of Toledo.

The Cathedral of Toledo is one of the three 13th-century High Gothic cathedrals in Spain and is considered to be the magnum opus of the Gothic style in Spain.

Spain is know for its Jamón ibérico which is an expensive type of cured leg of pork. It's a popular tapas choice.

We enjoyed breakfast and late afternoon coffee on the street next to our hotel.

This beautiful site is located in Retiro Park. There is also a lovely lake and many other enjoyable features.
