A Hike Through a Jurassic Setting
There is an area in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in Humboldt County that was used in the second Jurassic Park movie. It’s called Fern Canyon and is named for the ferns growing on the 50-foot-high walls, through which runs Home Creek.
Fern Canyon is also recognized as a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve.

On the left is a screenshot from the movie. If you look at the right side of the photo and at photo I took on the right, you can see the same dark green foliage running vertically from the creek up the wall. This is a small waterfall that drips down the canyon wall. You can also see the similarities between these two as well. They aren’t a match, but you get the picture. (Pun intended.)

Dale and I did this one-mile hike on a Thursday afternoon. It was another amazing environment. The lush greenery, the crystal-clear water was different than anything we’ve seen so far. We followed the river bed a ways, then took a wooded path back to the parking lot. The wooded path was beautiful as well.

After our hike we stopped at a scenic overlook on our way home to enjoy our peanut butter and banana sandwiches I had made. While taking in the view I notices some very uniformly shaped pieces of driftwood. I grabbed my binos and took a closer look and discovered they were seals! I zoomed in with my phone and was able to get a pretty good photo!

Dale and I are currently in Napa. We arrived on Sunday and today is Tuesday. I have a few great photos from the drive I’ll share soon. In the meantime, enjoy these additional photos from Fern Canyon.
