Counting the Cost

Sticker shock accurately describes our overall impression of California prices. I’ve always known gas is higher here, so the $5.49 per gallon price was to be expected, however, I was not expecting the ridiculous prices at the grocery store. So, just to let off some steam, I’m going to share the cost of some items from our recent grocery shopping excursion.
Item | California | Texas |
Philadelphia 8 oz block of cheese | 5.79 | 3.10 |
Carnation Canned Milk, 12 oz | 2.99 | 1.79 |
Nabisco Ritz Chips | 5.49 | 4.08 |
Oscar Meyer Smoked Turkey Breast | 7.79 | 5.18 |
Total | 22.06 | 14.05 |
We spent $8 more on just those items than we would have in Texas! We got other items as well, but we bought the store brand, so we couldn’t really compare apples to apples.
I also went to the laundromat this morning and dropped almost $20 in quarters for two loads. That was a pleasant experience, not.
So, there you have it. Not everything about traveling is sunshine and lollipops! Ha ha!
Instead of venting in this blog, I should have been posting about our jaw-dropping hike through a Redwood Forest yesterday afternoon. I’ll get to that soon!
