A Full Day of Redwoods

Saturdays are big days for us. Dale works all week and we attend a local church on Sundays, so I usually plan our biggest adventures for Saturday. This past weekend we walked close to 10 miles, mainly on two trails – The Boy Scout Tree Trail and the Grove of the Titans – both located in the Redwood National Forest.
Boy Scout Tree Trail
A lot of research goes into choosing our activities. I don’t want to waste a minute! While searching the web I came across a photo of a Boy Scout Troop standing in front of a particularly large Redwood. When I discovered it was within driving distance of our place in McKinleyville I put it on our agenda.

The 5.8-mile trail is located down a bumpy, narrow, dirt road that winds through a Redwood Forest. (Our poor Subie has collected dirt from Utah, Oregon and now California!) As I continued looking at the route, I also saw another trail named the “Grove of the Titans” located nearby. Wow, we could hit two awesome-sounding trails in one trip!
The Boy Scout Trail was totally worth it. It was just as beautiful as the Trillium Falls Trail a couple of days before. Not only did we see the actual tree but we enjoyed a small waterfall on Jordan Creek.

Grove of the Titans
After finishing the Boy Scout Trail we headed less than a mile down the road to hike a trail to the Grove of the Titans.
Known by indigenous people for thousands of years, the group of trees was “re-discovered” and became a destination for many visitors seeking “The Titans”. So much damage was done by hikers they built a raised boardwalk which was completed just last year. It was one of the nicest trails we’ve been on.
